UN urges accelerated preparations for Afghan elections
UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The U.N. Safety Council is urging Afghan authorities to speed up preparations for elections in October and stressing the significance of “a safe setting” for credible voting to happen.
The U.S. and NATO forces formally concluded their fight mission on the finish of 2014 and a resurgent Taliban and an Islamic State affiliate have launched main assaults since then.
The council mentioned in a press release Monday accepted by all 15 council members that fast motion is required on excellent points together with approval of candidates to fill “essential vacancies” on the Unbiased Election Fee and Electoral Complaints Fee.
It mentioned a central database of the greater than 8.9 million registered voters have to be established “that identifies irregularities,” and a last checklist of candidates have to be revealed.
